Baja California Sur Real Estate
Los Cabos means “the Capes” and refers to two towns, Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, which sit at the very end of the Baja Peninsula. The largest peninsula in North America, the Baja stretches more than 800 miles south from Mexico’s border with California—twice the length of Florida! The peninsula tapers dramatically from 144 miles wide at the border all the way down to its tip in Cabo San Lucas, where you could jump one direction into the Sea of Cortés or the other into the Pacific Ocean. This last rock outcropping is the famed El Arco, “the Arch,” a trademark rock formation sitting on the edge of downtown Cabo San Lucas. Los Cabos is a compact region whose highlights include 360 sunny days each year, excellent golf, fishing, dining and a relaxed, upscale atmosphere. Before there were roads to the region, or even an airport, this was a popular fishing destination for movie stars like John Wayne and Bing Crosby and avid anglers like Ernest Hemingway, who came by seaplane to escape crowds, drink margaritas and chase marlin all day. Just south of El Arco, where the waters of the Pacific and the Sea of Cortés converge, sits “Marlin Alley,” justly renowned as one of the two or three best places in the world to angle for trophy-size marlin. As a result, Cabo’s marina is one of the largest in the world for sport fishing and has driven the town’s growth, making Cabo San Lucas far more developed than its Cape sibling.
Shopping, dining and fishing are Cabo San Lucas’ main attractions. The marina district has just been modernized and is now surrounded with high-end restaurants, an upscale shopping district and numerous watersports and charter-fishing companies. The city radiates north from the marina, and the blocks immediately around it are lined with restaurants—from the five-star variety to stands selling fish tacos, the Baja specialty—as well as boutiques and the town’s famously frenetic nightclubs, including Cabo Wabo, owned by rock star Sammy Hagar.
Compared to Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, 18 miles away, offers visitors another side to Los Cabos with all the charm and beauty of a traditional Mexican town. Centuries-old architecture surrounds the church and Plaza Mijares, the spacious main square. Today’s San Jose is known as the “over 30” side of Los Cabos, with the flavor of colonial-era days gone by. Boulevard Mijares runs from the main plaza past City Hall to the beachfront hotel zone. Shops, galleries, and bistro-style restaurants are tucked away around the historic church and plaza. There’s an easygoing quality to daily life in San Jose, but like Cabo, there’s a boom on. Nearby are championship golf courses, fishing, water sports, eco-trips and tours. San Jose is also the gateway to the area’s newest Master Planned Development, Puerto Los Cabos, the East Cape’s pristine beaches and the biologically diverse Sierra de La Laguna range.
In between the two major towns is a coastal corridor where you will find some of the best golf courses in Mexico, including Jack Nicklaus’ Signature Cabo del Sol Ocean Course, the country’s most acclaimed rated layout. In the same resort sits Tom Weiskopf’s Signature Desert Course, and nearby are two more Nicklaus coastal courses, El Dorado and the 27-hole Palmilla. In addition to golf there are a variety of world-class hotels and spas, many of which have excellent restaurants.
